Waylon Thornton // Rat Brew
A few weeks ago I premiered a track called “Chamomile & The Kingdom of Light” off of a new untitled Waylon Thornton solo album. Waylon told me that he was intent on taking his sound in a slightly different direction. Well since then he has been working like gang busters to get this new album finished. And now here we are with the finished product in all its rollicking glory. Carrying the pitch-perfect title of Rat Brew, the album expounds gloriously on the promise of that first track.
One of the many things that I really dig about Waylon’s music is how spontaneous it feels. Now I don’t mean spontaneous in the sense that it springs from his brain in a half-baked format, but rather it seems like he has this swirling pool of musical inspiration churning inside of him and every once in a while it just explodes all over the place (just count the number of projects he’s released this year alone). The best part is that it is always quality music. He has this southern blues inspired garage rock vibe that wouldn’t feel entirely out of place in a haunted Louisiana swamp. And in Waylon’s hands the grime never felt so good.
Download the excellent Rat Brew for free on Waylon’s spankin’ new bandcamp and then after that if you find you can’t get enough you can dive into his blogspot page where he has numerous other free albums just waiting to be downloaded.
